About Aziza

Aziza are small magical creatures with a Western African heritage.  Similar to sprites, fairies and pixies.  Seeing an Aziza can be a very lucky thing.  They have been known to bestow knowledge and wisdom.

Azizas can be quite shy.  You will notice as you explore Detroit's Aziza village that many have their homes hidden among the trees.  While they tend to live alone, we have located at least one duplex on Aziza Lane.  Other homes are far off the paths.

In 2015, the People for Palmer Park led an effort to reestablish Detroit's Aziza population.  Using funding from CDAD the organization created a new program- The Magic of Art In Palmer Park (MAPP).   Project leaders Barbara Barefield and Vickie Elmer worked with John Rizzo and a gaggle of young people and families to create the first thirty homes.  These were installed along Aziza Lane and Fairie Way.   As the home are occupied more may be developed.

One peculiar thing you will notice when you see these homes is that only the front doors are visible.  Passing through the door is best described as transporting to another dimension. If you ever are lucky enough to see an open door you will understand.

2020 Update

The city dwelling Aziza's have arrived!  Check out the street lights along Merrill Plaisance to see the newest Aziza homes, located in the new street lamps.   If you see any Aziza looking for a new home, please point them towards these.  Please note that many of the original Aziza homes, located in the woods have been upgraded and no-longer have visible front doors.  You can follow the map to see how many you can find, but don't be surprised if some are not viable where indicated.
